The Number One Reason Behind Why Most Strategic Plans Fail to Deliver
Strategic planning is known that the activity promotes the success of the organization. The password policy in its earliest beginnings to a general means to deceive his enemies. In today’s world does this mean to think of the management team at the competition.
Unfortunately, the research, believe that not drain the majority of these resources strategic plans to achieve the desired results. In short, the plans fail to reach the mark.
Many blame this error on one or more of these syndromes:
* Elephant syndrome (too many committees, any attempt to see a part of the elephant, without defining the whole picture
Executive isolation syndrome, or the ivory tower mentality syndrome (managers of the plan in isolation, without developing the contribution of external and internal customers and other stakeholders) osmosis syndrome (everyone knows what have no contact details)
But from my experience in working with small and large firms, is the reason most of the strategic plans fail because of lack of agreement. In the past I wrote about the five-star model of recovery by Jay Galbraith. This is probably the simplest model to determine why the strategic planning, because it does not begin with the strategy that the highlight of the stars.
Clockwise, the second point of the star. The extent to support the structure of the strategy? Take the example of education. The structure of most K-12 education companies, public or private land is on an agricultural-based economy. Even if the U.S. economy has left the model 100 years ago, our school to support this economy is no longer relevant. (I personally am very sure why this archaic model is still supported by supposedly intelligent people to be confused.)
The third star is a process or system. With an inefficient structure, processes or systems are also affected. Educational research suggests that children who are in arrears by the end of the school year not to lose every three months during the summer, but their losses are in the course of time learning exponentially. No matter what new processes or systems are accepted, but not significantly adversely affect the desired results. Perhaps this is why give up so many young students, the decision to the Middle School or Junior High take.
Continuation of the movement in a clockwise direction, rewards and incentives is the fourth point of the stars. am From the ranks (I still try to understand why a school district passing no less than 75%) provides for educators paid for performance, are all part of this area.
The people are the fifth and final point. For example, managers are trained to be excellent teaching leaders, but many managers are really poor. As leaders in leadership get the results of the other, this is not really in business skill development components. Secondly, many managers of this management approach inherent weakness in higher levels of the administration as Deputy General Manager.
The results and its customers are in the middle of the star. After processing with educational institutions, the emphasis is almost a black hole. Many school districts never ask this basic question: Who are our customers? It is usually a presumption customers are students or parents. And this is where the parents are providing the funds (tuition, fees, etc.) to support the school with the schools as a purely private.
But in public schools where the majority of taxpayers have no children in the neighborhood, customers (external) to the taxpayers, because they are the basis for most of the costs of raising their property taxes. That is why so many tax referendums for public financing of education is not new to the construction.
As Galbraith notes, if it happens differences between these two points, the difference is and what concerns the implementation of the strategy. Failure of implementation leads to a waste of resources. Because many strategic plans to mention hundreds of hours not all of the thousands of dollars in terms of wages and consulting fees, are the negative impacts enormously.
So, if your organization, whether to produce profit or non-profit plans or revise its strategic plan, remember that the other four points on the model of five stars for the development organization. Through this approach, you can actually successfully run your existing strategies and initiatives.
